I did a search on the type of weapon used by the shooter, it was a 7.62 mm
Semi-Automatic Rifle. In the specs notice it fires 35-40 rounds per minute.
What makes this a hunting rifle? It is designed for military use. I respect
and agree with the constitutional right to bear arms - and the
non-constitutional concept to arm bears. However, why should the general public be
allowed to own this type of weapon? I hope the NRA lobby is sleeping well tonight,
after all, the gun didn't kill the other hunters, it was only the easy
availability of a semi-automatic weapon.
Type 56, 7.62 mm Semi-Automatic Rifle
The 7.62 mm Type 56 semiautomatic rifle is a Chinese copy of the Soviet SKS,
which was delivered to China along with the AK-47 automatic rifle in the
1950s. The Type 56 is the first standard issue military rifle used by the PLA
from the late 1950s to the mid 1980s.
The Type 56 offered a great improvement in firepower over the obsolete
bolt-action rifles it replaced. It was rugged, reliable, and tolerant to the
abuses of use in the field. The rifle used the standard 7.62 mm Type 56 rifle
cartridges in ten-round clips.
The Type 56 rifle was regarded as a very capable weapon in the ages of the
"People's War". It is very accurate over long distance engagements, and can be
easily built and maintained. Over a million Type 56s were delivered to the
PLA, as well as exported to North Vietnam and other third world countries in
the 1960s.
The Type 56 had taken part in almost every single war and conflict of China
since 1960. The last time it saw great actions in combat was in the 1979
Sino-Vietnam border war, when the PLA eventually realized that the semiautomatic
rifle does not have enough firepower for modern land combats.
Most Type 56s had been retired from operational service by the late 1980s. A
small number are currently being used by the PLA and People’s Armed Police on
ceremonies.
