[Mb-civic] Robert Moog

Along with only a handful of others, Bob Moog truly changed the face of popular music. Indeed, it is arguable that the entire genre of "progressive rock" would not have developed without him - and certainly not the way, and with the rapidity, that it did. From The Beatles to Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues, Genesis, King Crimson, and, of course Yes (Rick Wakeman) and ELP (Keith Emerson), the Moog synthesizer changed the course of music history in a way that few inventions did.

Indeed, I saw the very first prototype Moog synthesizer used - by Bob Moog himself - at a "Young People's Concert" with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble (remember them?). This was the same year that Moog gave his other prototype to Keith Emerson, who was then playing with The Nice (pre-ELP).

Even outside of the "prog" world, the Moog synthesizer became the "gold standard" for "pop" groups seeking to add new "layers" and "textures" to their sound: from 70s supergroups like Fleetwood Mac and Journey to almost every major British pop group of the 80s, the Moog synthesizer became an integral part of their sound.

And, of course, Moog started the sythesizer "revolution," bringing about the thousands of synthesizers now (and earlier) in production by dozens of companies.

His contribution to popular music cannot be understated. He is, and was, rightly revered. A true genius is gone.

Peace.
