Police Detain Actors in Guantánamo Film
Actors in a prizewinning film about the Guantánamo Bay detention camp were questioned by the police when they landed in England upon their return from the Berlin International Film Festival, the BBC reported. The men starred in "The Road to Guantánamo," winner of a Silver Bear award. "Six people were stopped under the Terrorism Act," said a spokeswoman for the Bedfordshire police, who noted that the men were not arrested and were quickly released at the Luton airport. The spokeswoman said: "There is a heightened state of security since the London bombings. Public safety is paramount." One of the actors, Rizwan Ahmed, said a police officer asked if he intended to make more "political" films. Rhuhel Ahmed, one of the men whose detention is chronicled in the film, said he was verbally abused. The human rights organization Reprieve, calling for an urgent inquiry into the incident, described it as "an ugly farce." The film by Michael Winterbottom tells the story of the so-called Tipton Three, who went from England to Pakistan to arrange a wedding and wound up in Guantánamo after being picked up as suspected terrorists in Afghanistan. They were released in 2004 without being charged.
