I remember those signs when I drove with my parents from PA to Calif about ?? being bored with such a long ride they were a great thing to look forward to.
peace,

Some of you won't know what Burma Shave signs mean, we
older folks can remember them. It was one of the
things I remember when us kids would stop fighting in
the back seat. Mom would just have to say " Burma
shave", and we'd all try to be the first to read them
out loud. Our sister Sandi usually won because she got
to sit in front and we three boys had to sit in the
backseat. Not fair, she can see them first". WAH Wah.
That was our quick fix for another few miles till the
next one. Poor older brother Calvin, my twin brother
and I about drove him wild. He made it though, he is
now 64, a little crazy maybe, but he is still with us.

Remember these? For those who never saw any of the
Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our
history
of the 1930's and '40's. Before there were
interstates,
when everyone drove the old 2 lane roads, Burma Shave
signs would be posted all over the countryside in
farmers'
fields. They were small red signs with white letters.
Five
signs, about 100 feet apart, each containing 1 line
of a
4 line couplet......and the obligatory 5th sign
advertising
Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream. Here are more
of the actual signs:
