Nina,
I think this information is worth getting to those on your "Hair"
list. Thank's, Mary Lorrie Davis
Received this and am forwarding important info:
Hello.
I am sending this out to all in my e-mail contact list. I have lost many
eddresses that were in my work-related eddress book. So you all -
complete with dated and otherwise incorrect eddresses - are the only
contacts I really have and it is consequently up to you to get the word
out on what I believe is one of the most eggregious missteps to date post-K.
The President has suspended the Davis-Bacon Act for the affected region.
For my non-political friends and relatives, this is the long-in-place
provision that requires government contracts to pay the prevailing wage.
There is $60-some billion dollars down here already and counting. The
President has suspended the law that would have paid construction
workers $11 an hour. People want to go back and are willing to work in
toxic conditions to rebuild and they will not be paid enough to pay
inflated rent and bury their dead. Right now, even while Rita is
threatening the weakened levee system (I have been in New Orleans three
different days), outsiders from Texas and Florida are sweeping streets
and pulling out toxic debris from offices, hospitals, hotels, etc.
Military have tetanus, Hep A, Hep B, and diptheria shots. All else have
tetanus (myself included). In the meantime people are sitting in
shelters who could be in New Orleans in the place of people being bused
in from poi! nts beyond the immediate surroundings.
Please contact your Congresspeople. Both Senators and at least one
Congressperson from your state. Please tell their staff both at home and
in D.C. that Davis-Bacon must IMMEDIATELY be restored.
Social experimentation is happening in this region at an unprecedented
level. School vouchers, wholesale lay-offs of public school teachers,
environmental waivers, bid-letting without any sunshine, relaxation of
prudent business regulations, suspension of anti-trust regulations,
organized (so-called Christian) religion-based initiatives,
privatization of many services are ALL happening and will continue. But
this is one that decent folk can win.. Please work hard and long and
loudly to stop the suspension of Davis-Bacon.
Each of you have holiday card lists, rolodexes, and telephone and
address books. Some of you have contacts or chutzpah. For the love of
God, please use all these tools and reach out to fellow humans and
demand the re-institution of Davis-Bacon so loudly, so strongly, so
insistently and unrelentedly that those who allowed this to happen rue
the day they ever heard of Davis-Bacon.
Please - before a dime to the Red Cross or directly to those you may
know in the affected region ... before an hour spent at an evacuation
center or staffing volunteer phones ... before giving blood or lighting
a candle .. and before another week goes by - PLEASE help us fight this
battle.
Please forward this to your e-lists. Please contact your congressional
delegation. Write your local newspapers. Contact Central Committees. If
you would send copies of letters or e-mails or word about phone or other
efforts, it would be appreciated.
I can receive mail at the following:

Thank you,
Linda Santi
