Yes, the song Oh Great God of Power is in the official script, and always
has been. Hair has more songs than the average musical of its day did, and
so a number of songs were not included on the original cast album, in order
to allow it to conform to what a standard album length was in those days.
Some of the songs not included were recorded and then cut, reappearing on
the reissue of the OBC than came out - when? Dauber? Was it 88? Anyway,
other songs, like Oh Great God of Power, were never recorded originally, so
weren't on the reissue. It was only finally officially recorded for
DisinHAIRited.
It was included in some foreign recordings, and we have it on the recordings
of the live recordings that we have in the archives. It is such an unknown
song that it winds up being cut in many current productions, which is a
shame as it's a great song. In the recent Bridgeport production they opened
the second act with it, having cut Electric Blues, which was an odd way to
start Act II - with a slow, intense song. It is written in the script as
being a reaction to the blowing out of the electricity at the end of
Electric Blues (which ends with an explosion). It is done in the dark, with
the cast entering from all over the house, making their way to the stage
with flashlight, as the Aquarian ritual, recently discussed in the thread
started by John Z, took place on stage. Claude entered mid song from the
rear of the house in a gorilla suit, coming down the center aisle, and
reached the stage at the end of the song "He is Aquarius...Appear! Appear!"
in time for the reprise of Manchester.
