Shindig! is an American musical variety series which aired on ABC from September 16, 1964 to January 8, 1966. The show was hosted by Jimmy O’Neill, a disc jockey in Los Angeles at the time who also created the show along with his wife Sharon Sheeley and production executive Art Stolnitz. The original pilot was rejected by ABC and David Sontag, then Executive Producer of ABC, redeveloped and completely redesigned the show. A new pilot with a new cast cast of artist was shot starring Sam Cooke. That pilot aired as the premier episode. The series first aired for a half-hour every week, but was expanded to an hour in January 1965. In the fall of 1965, the show split into two half-hour telecasts, on Thursday and Saturday nights. Shindig!’s premiere episode was a pilot featuring Sam Cooke and the The Righteous Brothers. Later shows were taped in Britain with The Beatles as the guests. The series featured other “British invasion” bands and performers including The Who, The Rolling Stones and Cilla Black. Shindig continued to broadcast episodes from London throughout its run. Many popular performers of the day played on Shindig! including Lesley Gore, Bo Diddley and Sonny and Cher, The Beach Boys and James Brown. Shindig!’s success prompted NBC to air the similar series Hullabaloo starting in January 1965.By October 1965, the show was having ratings problems (Time magazine said “early-season tide [was] running against the teen scene”), and in January 1966, Shindig! was cancelled and replaced in its Thursday time slots by Batman. Series regularsAccompanying the music acts of the week, Shindig! also featured a dance troupe called the Shin-diggers choreographed by David Winters. One of the regular dancers was Teri Garr, who would go on to find success as an actress. The Shin-diggers’ assistant choreographer, Antonia Basilotta (better known as Toni Basil), was most widely known for the 1980s song “Mickey” Both Garr and Basil were dance students of Winters at the time and worked with him on most of his choreography projects. The series house band, the Shin-diggers (later renamed the Shindogs), featured a young Glen Campbell, Joey Cooper, Chuck Blackwell (drums), Billy Preston, James Burton, Delaney Bramlett, Larry Knechtel (on bass), Leon Russell (on piano), and Glen D. Hardin. Ray Pohlman was the show’s musical director and was also a member of the studio group that would be known as ‘The Wrecking Crew.’ In some instances when one of the Shindog guitarists was unable to work, Pohlman woud bring in ‘Crew’ guitarist Bill Aken to fill in.Donna Loren, Jackie DeShannon and Bobby Sherman were regular vocalists on the series The Blossoms, an all-female vocal group featuring Darlene Love, backed up many of the performers and were occasionally featured in spotlight performances. The Wellingtons were a trio of male singers who performed on their own, and as backup singers.

A show called Shindig rocked the world in the 1960s featuring the greatest rock bands, soul singers, female singers and celebrities of that decade. Most have become legends; Including such groups as The Rolling Stones,The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Who, etc. The list goes on and on. The show was hosted by Jimmy O’Neil and included Go Go dancers and a young Bobby Sherman before he became a teen idol in 1970. There was a slew of afternoon music variety shows however Shindig on ABC was one of only 2 prime-time rock ‘n roll shows that aired on TV in the 1960’s along withHullabaloo seen on NBC. The host of this series was Jimmy O’Neill and the show house dancers were called the Shindig Dancers. The very first episode in September, 1964 saw Sam Cooke, The Everly Brothers, The Righteous Brothers, The Wellingtons, Alan Sues and a Shindig discovery in Bobby Sherman. Most of the biggest acts of the 1960s appeared on Shindig such as The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong, Neil Sedaka and The Rolling Stones, to name a few. Since they were not able to get the great and very popular Elvis Presley to ever appear on the show they dedicated an entire show in May 1965 to playing his music. The series aired in different time slots over it short period on the air which were:
September 1964 – January 1965 – Wednesday 8:30 to 9:00PM January 1965 – September 1965 – Wednesday 8:30 to 9:30PM September 1965 – January 1966 – Thursday & Saturday 7:30 to 8:00PM

Where the Action Is or (WTAI) was a music-based television variety show in the United States from 1965–67. It was carried by the ABC network and aired each weekday afternoon. Created by Dick Clark as a spin-off of American Bandstand, Where the Action Is premiered on June 27, 1965. The show’s theme song, “Action”, became a hit single for Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon, peaking on the charts (#13) in September 1965. Most of the telecasts, all of which were produced in black-and-white, were taped at various locales in Southern California. The theme song was written by Steve Venet and Tommy Boyce who would later write songs for The Monkees. The program had its own stable of performers, most notably Paul Revere & the Raiders, who served as the de facto house band. When the group departed the show in 1966, they were replaced by The Robbs. Other regular performers on Action included the dance troupe Pete Manifee and the Action Kids. Individual episodes featured a wide range of guest performers, as detailed below. The weekday program was cancelled on March 31, 1967, with the network giving its local affiliates the time slot. However, members of the program’s mainstay band Paul Revere and the Raiders (with lead vocalist Mark Lindsay) hosted very similar follow-up shows; both Revere and Lindsay hosted Happening ’68, a Saturday afternoon follow-up to American Bandstand, and a weekday version of the same show, It’s Happening, from 1968 to 1969. Both shows were produced by Dick Clark’s production company for ABC. The Where the Action Is TV show was a 30 minute musical varity series on ABC that featured performances by the best rock and roll groups from the mid-1960s.

Theme Song Lyrics Title: “Action” Composed By: “Tommy Boyce & Steve Venet” Performed By: “Freddy ‘Boom Boom’ Cannon”
Oh, baby come on, let me take you where the action is.
Oh, baby come on, let me take you where the action is.
Oh, baby come on, let me take you where the action is.
It’s so neat to meet ya baby where the action is.
In every little town cross the U.S.A.
There’s a spot where the people tangle everyday
Just leave your problems and get away
Come down and listen to the guitars play.
Dance, dance dance when you hear that beat
Dance, dance dance get up off of your seat
Dance, dance dance let your back bone slip
Let’s go to the place on the Sunset Strip
Oh, baby come on, let me take you where the action is.
Oh, baby come on, let me take you where the action is.
Oh, baby come on, let me take you where the action is.
It’s so neat to meet ya baby where the action is.
Where the Action Is Trivia: All of the Where the Action Is episodes where filmed in Black & White. The majority of the episodes were shot at Malibu Beach and Bear Mountain in California but others were taped in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan.
Dick Clark’s legendary musical series, “American Bandstand” was originally aired on Monday-Friday. Then, in 1965 after two years on the air, it moved to just one show weekly on Saturday afternoons. Mr. Clark decided to develop a “spin-off series” titled “Where the Action Is” in order to fill the weekday after school pop music void left by American Bandstand’s time change. By the way, when Dick Clark in 1989 stopped hosting American Bandstand, it was the longest TV variety program to ever be on the air! The Dance Troupe that entertained audiences on Where the Action Is was named, “Pete Manifee and The Action Kids”. One of the Dancers on Where the Action Is, “Keith Allison”, got a great boost to his stature when he later joined “Paul Revere and the Raiders”! The Where the Action Is theme song (see above) made it as high as #13 on the pop charts in September of 1965! After Where the Action Is was canceled, the story didn’t end there! Paul Revere and the Raiders had become a superstar group and had several hit records through the early 1970s! Together, Paul Revere and lead vocalist Paul Lindsay hosted a Saturday afternoon series nearly identical to Where the Action Is titled, “Happening ’68” and another weekday series from 1968-1969 titled, “It’s Happening”, from 1968 to 1969. Again, both of those shows were also produced by Dick Clark and aired on ABC. Then, in both 1973 and 1985, Where the Action Is returned to the air for two more very short runs! In 1987, CBS aired another series, “Keep on Cruisin” which was also a Where the Action Is clone. The Pilot Episode: The Supremes / Jan & Dean / The Four Seasons / Bobby Freeman (Never Broadcast)
