MARTY MARTIN
Marty Martin (Playwright) has been writing, directing, and producing plays for 25 years, working intimately with such distinguished artists as Anthony Quinn, Cloris Leachman, Mickey Rooney, and Pat Carroll. Following the death of playwright Hugh Wheeler, Mr. Martin completed the book for the Broadway production of Meet Me In St. Louis, which was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Book For A Musical. Praised by Time Magazine, Newsweek, Variety, and the legendary New York Times theater critic Walter Kerr, productions of his plays Off Broadway have received both Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Arts Recording. Mr. Martin was also the recipient of the Drama Logue Critics Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Theater. His plays Gertrude Stein Gertrude Stein Gertrude Stein, I Don't Want To Be A Zelda Anymore, and Shaviana enjoyed extended runs in New York. Regional productions of his plays, A Clown of God, The Necessary Luxury Company, Farewell Performance, Diaghilev, and The Bishop have been praised by critics throughout the Southwest. His plays have also been highly acclaimed in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Houston and Dallas, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C., as well as in Mexico, Iceland, Italy and Israel. Mr. Martin is resident playwright for the Stratford Festival Theater in Connecticut, sponsored by the American National Theater and Academy. This play has benefitted greatly from the encouragement and assistance provided by the Pearl S. Buck Foundation. The book on which it has been based, Pearl S. Buck: A Cultural Biography, was written by Peter Conn. The Dragon And The Pearl is affectionately dedicated to Valerie Harper and Tony Cacciotti.
