WASHINGTON, May 22 (Reuters) - The Banned In Boston label was removed from the musical Hair today by the Supreme Court.
The court refused a motion by Massachusetts state authorities to nullify a Federal Court order clearing the way for the show - nude scenes and all - to be presented in Boston.
Hair opened in Boston Feb. 22 after an advance sale of $800,000. But its run was cut short when the State Supreme Court ruled that the production violated Massachusetts obscenity laws. The ruling was overturned by the United States District Court, prompting Massachusetts authorities to appeal to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court rejected the state's motion with a 4-4
vote. A tie-vote is sufficient to uphold the action of a lower court.
